Last month it was reported that Tarsem Singh (The Cell and The Fall) was offered the opportunity to direct a live-action Snow White film called The Brothers Grimm Snow White. Today it's been reported that the director has officially signed on to direct the film. The movie is set to start production in March of next year. Singh is currently in post-production on The Immortals which opens November 11th from Universal.
As you know, this isn't the only Snow White film going into production. There is also one being developed at Universal Pictures called Snow White and the Huntsman, which has been gaining a lot of momentum recently with Johnny Depp and Charlize Theron circling the project. In addition, Disney is working on a film called Snow White and the Seven.
Regardless of the fact that Brett Ratner is involved with this particular Snow White project, I love that Tarsem is directing it! This guy has such an incredibly crazy imagination, and I can't wait to see what he ends up doing with this classic fairy tale. There's no doubt it's going to look great visually.
What do you think about Tarsem directing this Snow White film?
This project is the one being set up at Relativity Media with Brett Ratner producing. In a previous interview he had this to say about the project.
This is not your grandfather’s Snow White. Melisa [Wallack, who wrote the script] went back to the 500 year old folk tale and put in some of the things that were missing from Walt Disney’s film. His dwarfs were miners, and here they are robbers. There is also a dragon that was in the original folk tale. Walt made one of the great movies of all time, but ours is edgy and there is more comedy. The original, made for its time, was soft compared to what we’re going to do.
