Todd McFarlane Talks about new SPAWN Animated Series
We've been hearing about a new Spawn animated series, and a new Spawn film for years now! I think it would be cool if it happened, but I'm not going to hold my breath. McFarlane keeps talking about these projects but it's never gone beyond talking about it.
In a recent interview with MTV, McFarlane talked about a second animated series he's apparently developing. I loved the original HBO animated series! That was such a cool show, and it got better as it progressed from season to season.
When asked if the new series would keep the dark gritty tone of the original series, he said,
Absolutely, we're going to a cable network, and that's their bread and butter.
They want stuff that isn't what you can find on ABC, NBC and CBS. They've covered that field. We have now an area where we can actually do shows that get a little grittier, a little darker, a little more risque.
To some extent, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The three years [that 'Spawn'] was on HBO, it won an Emmy -- two of 'em -- for various reasons. They're going, 'Just give us what you're doing. You know what you're doing, just bring it over here and don't put it on their channel, put it on my channel.' So I don't think it's going to be an issue once we get down to it.
The key comment McFarlane made here was, "once we get down to it." Which says to me that this potential series still hasn't really moved past the stage of just talking. I wouldn't expect to see another Spawn series anytime soon. A few years ago a new series was in pre-production, but it all fell apart.
What are your thoughts on a new Spawn animated series? Do you think it will actually happen?
