Eminem to Star in SOUTHPAW for DreamWorks
DreamWorks Pictures recently bought a pitch for a film called Southpaw, and Eminem a.k.a Marshall Mathers is set to star in the film. The film will be scripted by Sons of Anarchy creator and executive producer Kurt Sutter.
According to Deadline, "Southpaw will be fueled by the struggles that inform Eminem's music and mirror his life. Eminem will play a fast-rising welterweight boxer who brawls his way to the title, only to see his world crash down around him due to tragedy. The movie is about his fight to reclaim past glory."
It's a film idea that we've seen several times before. There's nothing new here, but it will be interesting to see how the story is told. I'm surprised that Eminem hasn't made more films. I thought he was really good in 8 Mile, and I expected him to do a little more in the film world. It will be interesting to see how this movie turns out.
DreamWorks co chairman/CEO Stacey Snider is the one that bought the pitch. She also helped Eminem bring 8 Mile to the big screen, when she was working over at Universal Pictures. The deal comes after Eminem's recent album, Recovery, received 10 Grammy Awards nominations.
