Third UNCHARTED Game Gets A Title; Trailer Will Debut at Spike Video Game Awards
Entertainment Weekly scored some big news today about my favorite video game franchise. The next game, following in the footsteps of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, will be called...Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception.
According to Naughty Dog’s creative director Amy Hennig, the theme of deception plays out in multiple ways throughout the threequel, from Drake doing the deceiving to Drake being deceived to some mysterious deception about Drake’s very identity. The story focuses on the hero’s relationship with his mentor and father figure, fan fave Victor “Sully” Sullivan, and has him searching for a legendary lost city that will ultimately take him to the Arabian Peninsula and the vast wasteland of the Rub’ al Khali Desert, also known as the Empty Quarter.
The game is set in the desert and will be released at the end of 2011.
This news comes soon after the announcement that The Fighter director David O. Russell is reuniting with star Mark Wahlberg to make a live-action film version of Uncharted, presumably the first of a new franchise for Sony Pictures. Naughty Dog, the company responsible for the game, expressed interest in 2011 becoming a "transmedia" year for Uncharted, expanding out to multiple platforms (including an upcoming novel) and trying to build the property into something more expansive (ala Star Wars).
I'm totally stoked for this game, since Uncharted 2 is literally one of my favorite video games of all time. I love this franchise, and even though Nathan Fillion would have been the obvious (and best) choice for a movie version of our hero (they have the same name, for God's sake!), I'm sure Wahlberg will do a fine job with it and I'm excited to see what David O. Russell can do with a movie version. Even if it sucks, the games will still be incredible.
