We were actually very close to getting a fourth Bourne film off the ground and into production not too long ago. Then director Paul Greengrass bailed on the project and wasn't interested in pursuing it. So where does that leave Matt Damon and the Bourne franchise? According to Damon there may end up being a prequel to the film before we see a fourth Bourne film. Here's what he had to say,
There’ll probably be a prequel of some kind with another actor and another director before we do another one, just because I think we’re probably another five years away from doing it – we’ve got to get a script…
The word "probably" could mean this bit of news is not 100% solid or confirmed. But it definitely tells us that Universal Pictures is definitely talking about rebooting the Bourne franchise without the talent that started it all. This is the exact same thing that Sony is doing with Spider-Man. Rebooting solves all the talent problems for a studio, by just starting over.
I think a prequel to Bourne could be cool. There's a huge and interesting background story to the character that I'd be interested in seeing brought to life. I just would hope that it would be made with the same quality of filmmaking as the first three films.
What are your thoughts on a Bourne prequel?
