Penelope Cruz in talks to star opposite Johnny Depp in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4
Director Rob Marshall (Chicago, Memoirs of A Geisha) is looking to reunite with his Nine star Penelope Cruz, as she is in negotiations to star opposite Johnny Depp in Disney's fourth installment in the Pirates franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
While official plot details are being kept secret on Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot's script, it is known the tale will revolve around the Fountain of Youth --with Disney acquiring the rights to Tim Powers' 1987 fantasy novel of the same name, On Stranger Tides, which is about pirates on a search for the Fountain of Youth.
Despite Depp's earlier waning interest in the franchise after the unexpected departure of Dick Cook, the longtime head of Walt Disney Studios, Depp is officially back to reprise his role as the iconic fan-favorite, Captain Jack Sparrow.
Details for Cruz's character are being kept under wraps, though she is said to be "Sparrow's foil and equal in many ways." Cruz's performance in Nine has earned her an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress just last week, with her winning best actress for 2009's Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
Even with the mixed reviews of the last two sequels, fan response for more Pirates movies has been predominantly positive. I'm excited to see where the story goes, now that Orlando Bloom's story was wrapped up.
Jerry Bruckheimer will of course be producing On Stranger Tides and will roll cameras this summer in Hawaii. Disney has set a Pirates 4 for a May 20, 2011 release.
What do you think of Penelope Cruz possibly joining PIRATES 4?
