Kurt Cobain Biopic to be developed by The Messenger Director Oren Moverman

We all knew it was only a matter of time before someone made a biopic on the 1990's alternative music icon Kurt Cobain. It has been trying to get off the ground for a couple years now, but details are still trying to be figured out. Brothers screenwriter David Benioff actually took on the project back in 2007 for Universal Pictures. He actually did a great deal of first-hand research with Cobain’s old friends in Aberdeen and Seattle to inform the drafts of his Universal script. But I guess that didn't pan out because the studios are now in negotiations with Oscar Nominated writer and director of The Messenger, Oren Moverman, to develop the project. 

The film will take some material and information on the life, music and 1994 suicide of the Nirvana singer-songwriter from Charles R. Cross’ 2001 biography, Heavier Than Heaven: A Biography of Kurt Cobain. Universal originally purchased the life rights of both Cobain and his widow, Courtney Love, who had already optioned the film rights to the Cross book.

Back in 2005 director Gus Van Sant made a fictionalized film called Last Day which was inspired by Kurt Cobain's drug-addicted final days. No word yet on if Courtney Love will try and sue the studio for making a movie about Cobain even though she sold off the rights to the film. For those of you who don't know, she recently tried to sue Activision's Rock Band for using Cobain in the game even though she sold them the rights to do it.
