DEADPOOL Writers Talk about Script and Working with Ryan Reynolds

As of right now Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are hard at work developing the script for the highly anticipated spin-off film for Deadpool. Ryan Reynolds has been very vocal about this project, and is a driving force behind making it happen, and making it right. He is working very closely with the screenwriters to make sure he gets the Deadpool movie he has always wanted. In fact, the writers talk to him everyday.

Reese and Wernick were recently interviewed by MTV and they gave a nice little update on where they are in the scripting process and where they are going to take the character.

We’re outlining it pretty seriously right now. We’re in the early stages. We just absolutely adore the character and the comic. And tonally, it’s right up our alley. He’s the unstable, smart-ass, self deprecating guy — and they say write what you know, so [we’re perfect for it].

When I heard these guy were writing the film it seemed like a perfect match-up. Zombieland was a great film, and it proved that they had the kind of humor needed to bring the Merc with a Mouth to the big screen. They continued saying,

We’re very excited for ‘Deadpool,’ and have been developing it on a near-daily basis with Ryan Reynolds, who is just awesome. It’s such a collaborative process, with someone who’s so smart and passionate; it’s just been a true pleasure. What’s great about Ryan is that he’s been the keeper of the Deadpool flame for many years, he’s loved the character since forever; he lives it and breathes it. We’re a little newer to Deadpool, although we’ve done a bit of catching up. One of the nice things about working with Ryan is that he tonally gets it — if we ever do something that is off the Deadpool path, or if it doesn’t feel like Deadpool, he catches it.

There's no doubt that this Deadpool film is going to be Reynolds' movie, he is the biggest influence behind it, and since he is one of Deadpool's biggest fans, I think we can expect to see one of the best Marvel character films brought to us by FOX. I hope it is anyway! The writers obviously think so.

The movie is going to kick ass. It’s going to be great. It’s not going to be your father’s superhero movie, or even your older brother’s superhero movie. It’s definitely going to be irreverent and fun, and we owe a lot to that character, because it’s a wonderful character.

So there it is gang! Deadpool is on its way to be made into a film the way it should be. I can't wait to see what it is they have planned for both the story and look. After reading an interview like this it's hard not to get excited.

What do you think about the Deadpool film project after reading this interview?
