Christopher Nolan Talks about the SUPERMAN Reboot and BATMAN 3 for the first time

There's been a lot of happy fanboys and fangirls in the world since it was announced that director Christopher Nolan would serve as a Godfather-type producing figure on the new Superman reboot films, and that he finally is moving forward with the development of Batman 3. Now we finally get a chance to see what he's thinking and how he plans on developing these projects. Nolan recently did a great interview with LA Times in which he discusses these things for the first time since the news broke.

Let's start out with what he had to say about Batman 3, and how this third film will finish off the story.

Without getting into specifics, the key thing that makes the third film a great possibility for us is that we want to finish our story, and in viewing it as the finishing of a story rather than infinitely blowing up the balloon and expanding the story. We have a great ensemble, that's one of the attractions of doing another film, since we've been having a great time for years.

So, from what I gather Batman 3 will be the last Batman film that Christopher Nolan wants to make with his team of talent. It's kinda sad to think about, but I think it's the right move. Warner Bros. will just reboot the whole franchise again a year later anyway. I'm excited to see how they are going to wrap up the story of The Dark Knight.

Nolan says that Batman 3 is currently being written by his brother Jonathan. He says Jonathan is struggling to put together an epic story that we all want it to be.

I’m very excited about the end of the film, the conclusion, and what we’ve done with the characters. My brother has come up with some pretty exciting stuff. Unlike the comics, these things don’t go on forever in film and viewing it as a story with an end is useful. Viewing it as an ending, that sets you very much on the right track about the appropriate conclusion and the essence of what tale we’re telling. And it hearkens back to that priority of trying to find the reality in these fantastic stories. That’s what we do.

Now on to the Superman reboot! It was an idea that screenwriter David Goyer had that pushed the project forward.

He basically told me, 'I have this thought about how you would approach Superman. I immediately got it, loved it and thought: That is a way of approaching the story I've never seen before that makes it incredibly exciting. I wanted to get Emma and I involved in shepherding the project right away and getting it to the studio and getting it going in an exciting way.

Now Nolan will serve as a producer on the film much like Peter Jackson served as a producer on District 9. He goes on to say,

It’s very exciting, we have a fantastic story. And we feel we can do it right. We know the milieu, if you will, we know the genre and how to get it done right.

As for all the internet rumors about the title being Man of Steel, and that it will feature Lex Luthor and Brainiac, Nolan has no idea where this stuff comes from. Well Nolan, as if you didn't know, it comes from a ton internet bloggers and fan forums.

Nolan goes on to say that he admired what Bryan Singer did with the franchise, especially with how it connected to Richard Donner's classic film. But the Superman film that he is developing will stand on its own.

A lot of people have approached Superman in a lot of different ways. I only know the way that has worked for us that’s what I know how to do. Each serves to the internal logic of the story. They have nothing to do with each other.

As for who will end up directing Superman, Nolan says he has no idea, even though there's been rumors that his brother may take the reins.

I can't wait to see what Nolan has in store for us with both of these projects. There's no doubt they are just going to blow us away. It's awesome to hear that everyone involved with these projects is excited about them, and that they're doing everything they can to bring up a top of the line quality story and film.

What do you all think?
