Jamie Foxx Writing Film version of LAVERNE & SHIRLEY?! You Gotta be Kidding Me.
It was revealed on TV Guide that actor Jamie Foxx and director Garry Marshall are in the process of developing a big screen version of the 1970's TV series Laverne & Shirley. Not only that, but Jennifer Garner and Jessica Biel would like to play the two title characters in the movie. Garry confirmed saying,
Jamie and I are trying to do it. He’s writing it. It’s a whole different modern day take on how they came up on the streets during difficult times. Laverne would be this very tough girl with a big ‘L’ tattooed on her arm. Jennifer Garner would play Laverne and Jessica Biel would play Shirley.
It was also revealed that Foxx will write in roles for the original sitcom stars Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams, but won't say what their characters would be.
All of the people involved with this Laverne & Shirley adaptation worked together on the romantic comedy Valentines Day. I imagine they all went out for drinks one night after shooting, got a little tipsy, and started talking about adapting the series for the big screen. Everyone chose the parts they would play in making it happen, and bam! Here they are in early development on the film.
The show was a spin-off from Happy Days, as the two lead characters were originally introduced on that show as acquaintances of Fonzie. Set in roughly the same time period as Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley started in approximately 1959, and when the series ended, it was 1967.
I'm a bit surprised that Jamie Foxx is writing the script for the film, but not surprised at all that Garry Marshall wants to direct it.
What do you all think about a Laverne & Shirley film adaptation?
