Elm Street Director Samuel Bayer Wants to Direct Comic Book Adaptation of THE BOYS

Movie Graphic novel by Joey Paur

Samuel Bayer, the director of the A Nightmare on Elm Street reboot recently did an interview with ShockTillYouDrop and revealed what movie he is interested in directing next. The movie is a comic book adaptation of Garth Ennis' The Boys. Here's what Bayer had to say.

There’s one comic book I really dig that I want to go after that’s bad-ass. I’d like to get it, it’s called The Boys. It’s about a group of mercenaries and they’re job is to kick the shit out of superheroes who get out of line. It doesn’t get any better than that. In the world of The Boys, superheroes are scumbags. My youngest brother is a comic book historian and he introduced me to a lot of graphic novels like “The Dark Knight.” There are some great books I don’t think people have tapped into yet.

This comic book series is pretty freakin' awesome, and I think it would make for a great movie. But just because a director wants to direct something doesn't mean it's going to happen. But, the fact that there is a possibility of this comic book being adapted for the big screen is pretty damn cool.

If you haven't heard about this graphic novel, I've provided the official description from the first issue below.

This is going to hurt! In a world where costumed heroes soar through the sky and masked vigilantes prowl the night, someone’s got to make sure the “supes” don’t get out of line. And someone will! Billy Butcher, Wee Hughie, Mother’s Milk, The Frenchman, and The Female are The Boys: A CIA-backed team of very dangerous people, each one dedicated to the struggle against the most dangerous force on Earth - superpower! Some superheroes have to be watched. Some have to be controlled. And some of them, sometimes, need to be taken out of the picture. That’s when you call in The Boys!

As of right now Columbia Pictures has an option on the comic and Fast and the Furious producer Neal H. Moritz was attached to produced. A script was actually started being written back in 2008 by Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay who also wrote Aeon Flux, which as you know, sucked. Apparently nothing is happening with it now.

It would be great if Bayer was able to help shepherd this thing into production. A Nightmare on Elm Street was his first feature film, and I like what I've seen so far. He actually got his start directing music videos in the 1990's. He directed Nirvana's Smell's Like Teen Spirit, Blind Melon’s No Rain, The Cranberries’ Zombie, Hole Doll Parts, The Offspring Gotta Get Away, Metallica’s Until It Sleeps, and Sheryl Crow’s My Favorite Mistake.

What are your thoughts on Bayer trying to bring THE BOYS to the big screen?
