HE-MAN Movie Gets a Couple of New Writers

The two screenwriters that wrote the most recent Predators reboot film for Robert Rodriguez, Mike Finch and Alex Litvak, have been hired by Columbia Pictures to write the new script for the new He-Man film, Masters of the Universe.

There was a previous draft of the script written by Justin Marks, for Warner Bros. Kung-Fu Panda director John Stevenson was attached to develop the live-action film, but Mattel and Warner Bros. couldn't agree on how to develop the film. After Warner Bros. dropped the film project Columbia came in and picked it right back up. Now they are putting the He-Man project into development.

Mattel has final word and approval on what story will be used for the film. The writers and directors need to get a thumbs-up from the studio, which then has to win approval from the toy company. Let's hope Mattel has good taste in story. I heard the script written for Warner Bros. was epically incredible, but Mattel said no to it, so that kind of worries me. I think they want more of a kid friendly He-Man film, the original script was described as Lord of the Rings meets The Matrix meets Batman Begins epic.

THR reports that the scribes attempted to balance a treatment that would convince the studio it was cinematic and keep the toy company satisfied that its characters were being portrayed appropriately.

I'm a huge fan of He-Man, and I'm actually excited to see the character brought to life on the big screen. There's so much potential for it to be an extremely epic film, but it all depends on what Mattel wants to see. I just have a bad feeling it's going to end up being a mediocre film.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe started out as a toy line that spawned a popular animated series that ran from 1983 to 1985. They later created a couple animated TV remakes, and a terrible, but memorable live action film in 1987, which stared Dolph Lundgren.

How do you think the new Masters of the Universe film will end up at this point?
