Martin Scorsese will Shoot THE INVENTION OF HUGO CABRET in 3D

Movie Martin Scorsese by Joey Paur

It’s really no surprise that Martin Scorsese would direct his next film The Invention of Hugo Cabret in 3D. He recently gave an interview in which he praised 3D filmmaking and it was only a matter of time before he supported the 3D movement by making a 3D film himself. So he’s putting his words into action. Variety confirms that his film adaptation will most definitely be shot in 3D. Just to clarify, it will BE SHOT in 3D, not converted, so he will be developing it the proper way. It should be interesting to see how Scorsese tackles a family friendly 3D film, since all of his films have been dark and violent.

Either way the more 3D filmmaking grows the more I just don’t care. I’ve been wondering lately if reporting on 3D films is even news worthy anymore, it’s becoming the standard, and everyone’s doing it so there’s really no surprise. I just assume at this point that every big budget tent pole film will be in 3D from here on out, because that’s just how it is. I don't really care how I see a film, if the story is good I'll like it, if the story sucks then it sucks, 3D won't make the movie any better.

Here’s the story description:

Orphan, clock keeper, and thief, Hugo lives in the walls of a busy Paris train station, where his survival depends on secrets and anonymity. But when his world suddenly interlocks with an eccentric, bookish girl and a bitter old man who runs a toy booth in the station, Hugo's undercover life, and his most precious secret, are put in jeopardy. A cryptic drawing, a treasured notebook, a stolen key, a mechanical man, and a hidden message from Hugo's dead father form the backbone of this intricate, tender, and spellbinding mystery.

So far Sacha Baron Cohen and Ben Kingsley have been cast in the film. Cohen will play the station inspector, and Kingsley will play the famous real-life silent filmmaker, George Melies, who plays a pivotal role in the story. The movie is set to come out in December of 2011.
