An EMH Review...sort of: HOT TUB TIME MACHINE

ReviewMovie by EMH

I love the 80s. If there is a movie set in the 80s, I am usually in. So as ridiculous as this movie's title and premise was, I was interested in seeing it. So perhaps my judgement is clouded with respect to this movie. Nonetheless, I am here to tell you it is hilarious.

John Cusack hasn't done a movie this trivial since Better Off Dead, which is some of his best work. He is, in my opinion, among the most underrated actors in Hollywood. And how about these actors from The Office proving themselves on the big screen?!? Steve Carell, Ed Helms, and now Craig Robinson.

So what do I do now? Tell you about the movie? Talk about the plot? Dive into the strengths and weaknesses of the character development. Sheesh! This is why I couldn't do this for a living. I don't want to take a movie like this so seriously. It was a wacky comedy. Period. If you like the 80s, you'll probably like the movie. If you think it's going to be The Hangover, you will be disappointed. I will breakdown plots and the suspension of disbelief when I critique other movies. This time, I am just saying it's funny.

There will be obvious comparisons to The Hangover. This isn't very fair, but it's the way of the movie watching world. I myself just gave someone the following mathematical formula: The Hangover - Las Vegas + the 80s = Hot Tub Time Machine.

The difference is though, I may have laughed a little more and a little harder during Hangover, I was willing to trade the few extra laughs for what was more of a movie with some resemblance of substance.
