Review: THE LOSERS
Director: Sylvain White
Cast: Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana, Chris Evans, Idris Elba, Columbus Short, Holt McCallany, Oscar Jaenada, and Jason Patrick.
Synopsis:
The Losers centers around the members of an elite Special Forces unit sent to the Bolivian jungle on a search and destroy mission. But the team—Clay, Jensen, Roque, Pooch and Cougar—soon find that they have become the target of a deadly double cross, instigated from the inside by a powerful enemy known only as Max. Making good use of the fact that they are now presumed dead, the group goes deeply undercover in a dangerous plot to clear their names and even the score with Max. They are joined by the mysterious Aisha, a beautiful operative with her own agenda, who is more than capable of scoring a few points of her own. Working together, when they’re not arguing amongst themselves, they have to stay one step ahead of the globetrotting Max—a ruthless man bent on embroiling the world in a new high—tech global war for his own benefit. If they can take down Max and save the world at the same time, it’ll be a win win for the team now known as The Losers.
Review:
I didn’t have much hope for The Losers going in to watch it. As much as I love comic books and comic book movies, this looked like it was just going to fall flat on its ass. It looked like an A-Team knock-off. That being said, after seeing the film I thought it was a fun popcorn flick, and I actually enjoyed it. It was action-packed and funny.
This is definitely a very comic book style film, the dialogue doesn’t stray far from how comic books are written. There are a good amount of cheesy lines in the film, but it’s all in the name of fun. The movie doesn’t try to be a serious action film. The movie knows what it is, and it sticks to those fun comic book principals. The movie was also a lot more funny than I thought it would be, I loved the films humor.
For me, the best part of the movie was Chris Evans as Jensen. He was the comic relief in the film, and by far the most interesting and funny character. His character was in no way like Captain America, so don’t try and him playing the Captain when watching The Losers. They are two completely different characters, even though there is a little unintentional wink in the film to it. just know that he stole the show in this movie. One of the best scenes in the film has Jensen breaking into an office building disguised as a messenger. There's a point where he's cornered by some security guards, at this point he pulls off some fun trickery with the help of his teammate Cougar and his bad-ass sniper rifle. The other interesting character in the movie was the Max played by Jason Patrick. He’s the over-the-top wacky villain in the story that can get away with saying and doing anything. It was a little weird watching Patrick play this character at first, but as the movie progressed I enjoyed the strange little performance that he gave. Everyone else in the film did a good job in their perspective roles, they all had a great chemistry with each other.
I also want to point out that this movie was virtually bloodless, so if your expecting a blood bath you’re not going to get it. I’ve seen more blood in TV shows like 24. Seriously, people get shot... no blood, stabbed... no blood. There is even a brutal fight between Morgan and Saldana’s characters, they are literally bashing the hell out of each other, massive blows to the face, even chairs being smashed over there head, and when they’re finished... no blood. Are you serious!? Why yes, yes I am. This movie earned it's PG-13 rating.
The movie is far from perfect, and it has it’s problems, but it’s still a good action movie that you can enjoy watching. Just except the movie for what it is, sit back, relax, watch it and enjoy yourself. If you don’t have anything better to do, and you want to go to the movies for a good time, then I recommend going to see The Losers. If you read the comic book or not, this is a film that you might be able to enjoy watching.
If you have seen the movie what did you think?
