Mark Strong talks about playing Sinestro in THE GREEN LANTERN

It seems like Mark Strong has become the go-to-guy whenever a studio needs to cast a villain in a film. He played the villain in Sherlock Holmes, as well as the two upcoming films Robin Hood and Kick-Ass. As you know, he’s also set to play the main villain in Warner Bros. upcoming comicbook film adaptation of The Green Lantern. There are a lot of excited fans out there to finally get to see the Green Lantern brought to life on the big screen. In a recent interview with USA Weekend, Strong talked about his role in the film. He couldn’t reveal many details about the movie, but if you’ve read the comics then you already know what the story is.

Here’s what Strong could say,

For anybody who’s familiar with the Green Lantern and the origin story, the film closely follows the early comics. Sinestro starts out as Hal Jordan’s mentor, slightly suspicious and not sure of him because obviously Hal is the first human being who’s made into a Green Lantern. He’s certainly very strict and certainly unsure of the wisdom of Hal becoming a Green Lantern.  He is a military guy but isn’t immediately bad. It’s the kind of person he is that lends himself to becoming bad over the course of the comics being written, but initially he’s quite a heroic figure.

Strong then goes on to talk about the outfit he will wear and how the character will be very close to how he was portrayed in the early comic days.

That widow’s peak and thin mustache was for some reason originally based on David Niven, and Hal Jordan was based on Paul Newman. Obviously at the time, whoever was doing the original comics must have looked at them as guys doing very well in the film industry, and based those characters on them. So I would like to do justice to the Sinestro that was conceived for the comic books.

What more can a fanboy or fangirl ask for? It sounds like he’s into the role, and is going to do the classic villain justice when he brings him to life. I can’t wait to see more from this film, the Abin Sur spacecraft that was revealed yesterday was pretty freakin cool.
