CAPTAIN AMERICA to Set up The Winter Soldier?

Hey Gang! If you aren’t familiar with of the story of Captain America and what has been happening in the comics the last few years then this article could possibly contain spoilers for Marvels The First Avenger: Captain America and a possible sequel.

Now, if you’re currently up to date on your comic book reading then you should know who the Winter Soldier is, if you don’t then I will give you a little set up.

Captain America had a sidekick by the name of Bucky Barnes who is actually going to be in the movie currently being developed. In the comics Bucky disappears and is presumed dead at the same time Captain America is frozen in ice. Years later comic book writer Ed Brubaker brought Bucky back to life as a cybernetically enhanced Soviet sleeper agent with a cyborg arm, called the Winter Soldier and his character became pretty popular among the comic book fans.

Chud recently got some info from some inside sources at Marvel that say the films continuity is being set up to leave an opening for the Winter Soldier to show up in a sequel if there is one, or other future Marvel films.

Before this talk about the Winter Soldier began the studio was going to have Bucky actually survive the war, and there would have been a meeting between he and Captain America in modern day, of course Bucky would be an old man when they meet again. This is what actually went down in Marvel’s Ultimate universe.

This is all talk right now, the fate of Bucky could end up going either way, I’m sure there is still some back and fourth discussion going on about what they are going to do with Bucky. But, I think it would be awesome to see the Winter Soldier angle developed. It opens up for some fun new Marvel movies somewhere down the line.

Here is a more detailed rundown of the Winter Soldier:

As a young boy, James Buchanan Barnes lost his father (a soldier during WWII), and was adopted by Camp Lehigh as their mascot, and given the nickname "Bucky". It was here that he learned the identity of Captain America. He underwent rigorous training and was assigned to be Cap's sidekick, accompanying him on many adventures, and the two often worked with the original Invaders. However, on a final mission against Baron Zemo, Bucky and Cap hopped on an experimental drone plane in an attempt to disarm a bomb. The bomb detonated, dropping Cap in the North Atlantic, where he would later be found and thawed out by the Avengers. American forces never found Bucky's body, and he was presumed dead. Unbeknownst to the Americans, he was found and revived by Russian General Vasily Karpov.

When Bucky awoke, he had no memory of his identity, which gave Karpov an opportunity to reprogram Bucky as a Soviet assassin called the Winter Soldier. He was sent all across the globe, committing political assassinations with huge effects on the Cold War. However, his memory implantation caused mental instability, and he was kept in stasis between missions to prevent rebellion.

What do you think about the Winter Soldier being brought into the Marvel movie universe?
