Rian Johnson Gives a Plot Synopsis for His Sci-Fi Film LOOPER

Earlier this week it was announced that Joseph Gordon-Levitt was in talks to star in the new Rian Johnson sci-fi film Looper. This would reunite the actor and the director who both worked together on Brick. I'd love to see these two talents team up again! Apparently the trades got the little plot synopsis wrong. They said, The story takes place in a future in which time travel has been invented, with operatives sent back to the present to assassinate criminals, and that Gordon-Levitt would play a man sent back to kill himself.

Johnson then sent out a little twitter update clarifying the story of the film saying,

basically the exact opposite of what they wrote: hit men are sent their victims from crime orgs in the future.

So the trades had an idea, but it was all wrong. Now today a more detailed plot synopsis was revealed to Cinematical from Johnson, and here's how the director of the movie described the films plot.

Looper is a time travel movie, set in a near future where time travel doesn’t exist but will be invented in a few decades. It’s pretty dark in tone, much different from Bloom, and involves a group of killers (called Loopers) who work for a crime syndicate in the future. Their bosses send their targets hogtied and blindfolded back in time to the Loopers, and their job is to simply shoot them in the head and dispose of the body. So the target vanishes from the future and the Loopers dispose of a corpse that doesn’t technically exist, a very clean system. Complications set in from there.

Oh, hell yeah! That sounds like a freakin' great movie! I was excited for it when I found out that this would be Johnson's next film, but this story sounds absolutely amazing! Johnson is fantastic writer and director and I can't wait to see what he does with this sci-fi film.
