Fan-Made KING'S QUEST Series Gets Activision's Blessing

Games Activision by Wejo

In 2004, a small group of game developers with a common love of Roberta Williams’ King’s Quest series came together under the name Phoenix Freeware Studios (now called Phoenix Online Studios). The collective had but one goal: produce an episodic follow-up to Williams’ beloved creation. The Silver Lining, as their project was eventually christened, received attention from the general public and the current owner of the King’s Quest rights, Activision. Whilst the attention from the public was welcomed, the attention from Activision (and their attorneys) was not; Phoenix was forced to cease production on the game last March.

Thankfully, after a few months of deliberation, the suits at Activision realized putting the kibosh on a labor of love making use of one of their dormant properties was a mistake. Phoenix PR sent out a press release yesterday letting the world know that they’ve received the go-ahead from the powers that be to release their creation as planned.

“What is Decreed Must Be,” The Silver Lining’s first episode, drops you into the shoes of King Graham as he is preparing himself for a quest to save his children from an evil curse. You’ll be able to download it on July 10 for free from Phoenix’s website.
