Comic-Con 2010: THOR Panel and Footage Description

Movie ThorComic-Con by Joey Paur

Marvel unveiled the first footage from Marvel’s upcoming film Thor today, and it was epically glorious!

The Director of the film Kenneth Branagh came out on stage with Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Kat Dennings, Clark Gregg and Tom Hiddleston. There wasn’t a lot of stuff revealed that we didn’t already know. This panel was all about the showing the first Thor footage, and it’s what all of us wanted to see.

The extended Comic-Con trailer was shown to us in 3D, but unfortunately the 3D aspect of the trailer wasn’t really that impressive. But the actual footage they showed was incredible! From the images I saw of the film prior to this, I had high hopes that what we saw would blow us away, and I it surly did. I was floored by how awesome the trailer we saw was.

Here’s the footage description:

The trailer opens up with a massive thunder and lightning storm. We cut to a S.H.I.E.L.D. building that is hiding Thor’s hammer, Mjölnir, which was found in New Mexico at the end of Iron Man 2. As Agent Coulsen is interrogating Thor we see a series of shots showing Thor kicking the shit out of several S.H.I.E.L.D. agents in rain and mud, bashing their faces in. It is pretty brutal stuff. Coulsen sees the skills that this guy has and thinks he must be some kind of specially trained operative. The interrogation ends with Coulsen asking Thor who he is.

Cut to a moving shot of passing through space and time to the world of Asgard. We we a beautiful golden city, and get a great look at the design of Asgard and the palace in which Odin resides. Cut to Odin is rebuking Thor for being irresponsible, selfish and for bringing a war to Asgard as a result of his negligence. Thor is kneeling before Odin in this scene and Odin angrily casts Thor out of Asgard to teach him a lesson. This scene with Odin and Thor is powerful, and Anthony Hopkins gives an epic performance in what we saw.

Cut to Thor lying in the desert where he is found by Jane Foster and her assistant Darcy. Thor opens his eyes and disappointingly says... “this is Earth, isn’t it?” The two women take him in. There’s a little comic relief with Darcy when she makes the statement... “for an insane homeless man, he’s pretty cut.” There’s also a little talk about Foster and her team being on the verge of some discovery. Thor promises that she’ll find what she’s looking for if he gets what he wants.

He obviously wants his hammer back. When Thor gets to his hammer he tries to pull it out of the rock it is stuck in, but it doesn’t budge. Thor is left extremely frustrated. Of course we hear a voice over of Odin explain... “Whosoever lifts this hammer, if he is found worthy, shall wield the power of Thor.” So Thor obviously hasn’t learned his lesson... yet.

Cut to a series of shots with Loki taking over Asgard along with a very awesome amount of action packed footage! We see the Warriors Three battling some threat to Asgard, there is chaos in the New Mexico town where Jane Foster is working and we get a glimpse of the big battle between Thor and Loki.

There is another voice over from Odin in which he says Thor will have to face what’s coming to him. And at that point the Destroyer is introduced...and it. Is. Awesome! Coulson and other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents confront it this big metal monster in New Mexico, and one of the agent even asks if it is one of Starks little toys. The Destroyer’s face then opens up and a stream of hell fie and damnation comes shooting out of it’s face destroying everything!

I loved this footage! It was epic, beautiful, and extremely powerful. I’m 100% sold on Thor, and I can’t wait for you to see some footage of the film yourself. It’s going to blow you away. It looks like director Kenneth Branagh has done an incredible job bringing the story of Thor to the big screen, and I hope you like what you see of this film when you get to see it.
