Tron: Legacy Director Joe Kosinski is Pitching OBLIVION to Studios This Week
Tron: Legacy director Joe Kosinski has been working on developing his graphic novel Oblivion for the big screen over the last 5 years. He was hoping that it would be his directorial debut before Tron came along, he then had to put it on hold. Now it looks like the comic adaptation is at the point of development where the project is ready to be shopped around and pitched to the studios, which is what he's doing this week.
Since Kosinski got the Tron gig, he's been able to land a few cool film projects which include a remake of The Black Hole for Disney, he's in line to direct more Tron films, and he's attached to take on a Bourne style sci-fi thriller called Archangeles for Ridley Scott. I don't think he'll have a problem getting a studio on board with Oblivion, but it seems like a film he won't get to for another couple of years.
According to reports Kosinski pitched the project to Disney on Monday of this week giving them first dibs. If they don't take the project, he’ll be taking it around to other film studios throughout week. I'll be surprised if Disney passes on this. It seems like they have a solid relationship with the director, and I'd think they would like to keep him around for awhile.
The story is described as a big sci-fi epic that centers on a battle-damaged soldier who, assigned to a desolate planet after a court-martial, patrols the bleak landscape in an effort to destroy the last vestiges of a primitive alien race. When a mysterious traveler arrives unexpectedly, their lives become inextricably linked as they are forced to question everything they know about this world and themselves.
The comic looks very cool, and I'm interested in seeing what Kosinski has envisioned for it for the big screen.
