Next Season Of DOCTOR WHO Will Be Split Into Two Seasons

TV by LiamK

The next season of Doctor Who will have a mid-season "game-changing cliffhanger", according to showrunner Steven MoffatGuardian reports that the next season will be split in two by the cliffhanger, which will be the seventh episode, and the show will return in the fall for another six episodes, rather than a straight run through all thirteen episodes like the previous season.

I kept referring to a mid-season finale. So we are going to make it two series – seven episodes at Easter building to an earth-shattering climax, a cliffhanger we could never normally do because it would be too long before it came back. An enormous game-changing cliffhanger that will change everything.

...The wrong expression would be to say we are splitting it in two. We are making it two separate series.

...Tart that I am, we will now have two first nights and two finales, twice as many event episodes as we had before.

Moffat goes on in the piece to discuss his casting of Matt Smith in the iconic role and laughing at articles accusing the show of making Amy Pond a companion that is too sexy--he mentions Leela's leather bikini.

While we're on the topic of Pond, actress Karen Gillan appeared at an action figure signing event this weekend and made a minor comment or two about this year's Christmas special that will lead into the next season (or two), Kasterborous reports.

We’ve finished the Christmas special so that’s all in the can and it’s a good one. It’s really funny but it’s also heartbreaking and you get a glimpse into Amy and Rory’s honeymoon, which is an interesting one.

There’s a really, really scary one (monster) in the Christmas special.

Could said monster be the Yeti for which we saw an updated design earlier this year?

In one last bit of news on the coming season, Digital Spy reports Moffat is hinting that the Daleks, who have appeared in some form every season since the series' revival in 2005, might not make an appearance this time around.  Production of the season is far from over, but so far it would seem there are no Daleks.

There will be a Dalek story when we've got a good idea for a Dalek story. [When that happens], there will be lots of different kinds of Daleks.

The Guardian piece is full of other interesting quotes from Moffat, so be sure to have a look.
