More TORCHWOOD Details Released

The forthcoming season of Torchwood will be branded The New World, according to Hollywood Reporter

The new story will follow a CIA agent (Rex) and analyst (Ester) who tackle an alien-related global issue. Torchwood, having been destroyed and disbanded, is "like a legend now ... it's like something that's ceased to exist and is now spoken of only in whispers." Soon, Rex and Ester are on the run and are seeking out the help of Captain Jack and Gwen.

Show creator Russell T. Davies also acknowledges that airing on Starz could give the show more freedom content-wise.  Its past seasons have been more adult-oriented than Torchwood's parent show, Doctor Who.

"I've always had loose standards and practices," Davies said. "If the story demands intimacy or savagery, we will go there absolutely ... [but] there's nothing better than a great big global thriller that stops for a sex scene -- it's probably hard to make that happen in a thriller."

There are two posters circulating to promote the coming season:  the above image featuring Captain Jack Harkness and the one below showing Gwen Cooper.

If you're new to Torchwood, here's the basic rundown: it's a small, shadowy organization that investigates alien threats and presences on earth and hoards alien technology to use for earth's defense.  The organization was formed in Scotland in 1879 by Queen Victoria when the Doctor turned up and got involved in a big to do involving a werewolf, alerting the Queen to paranormal threats (Doctor Who:  "Tooth and Claw").  The group went through various incarnations up to recent years, when it was rebuilt and run by Captain Jack Harkness, a former companion of the Doctor.  Under Harkness' watch the group has gotten smaller each season, as team members tend to... die.

The word "reboot" is being thrown around a lot in articles about the next season, but it sounds like it will be a continuation of the established show that is intended to be a jumping-on point for new viewers.  Jack and Gwen, the last two cast members left standing in the wake of the previous Children of Earth arc, are definitely on board, and new blood is being introduced rather than the show bringing back earlier, now-deceased characters.

No author bio. End of line.
