Neil Gaiman's SANDMAN Being Developed as a TV Series
A film version of Neil Gaiman's comic book Sandman has been in development hell for years! Since the comic book first came out! There was also a point where HBO tried to get something going, but it never panned out. Now it looks like the property is finally seeing some movement, not as a movie but as a new TV series for Warner Bros. TV.
Honestly, I am such a big fan of this comic book that I really don't think a film or TV series will do the story any justice.
Apparently Warner Bros. is seeking a creative person to become the program's showrunner. THR reports that WB TV is actively in talks with several writer-producers to adapt the classic 1990's comic book. They also note that Supernatural creator Eric Kripke is at the top of the studio's list. I don't watch Supernatural so I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
Sandman launched DC Comic's Vertigo imprint, which ran for 75 issues beginning in 1989. Gaiman's worlds-within-worlds weaved an episodic antholgy, focusing on Morpheus, the Lord of the Dreaming, a deity who personifies dreams. The book began in the horror realm but quickly made its mark in fantasy and mythology as Gaiman introduced the Endless, a group of powerful brothers and sisters named Destiny, Death, Destruction, Despair, Desire and Delirium (as well as Dream).
Like all the other attempts to get this comic adapted in one form or another chance are this TV series will fall through as well.
