The New Wachowski Film COLBALT NEURAL 9 is Crazier Than We thought
There's been very little revealed about the Wachowski Sibling's new film Cobalt Neural 9. The story behind the film project has been shrouded in mystery. All we've known until know is that the film supposedly is set in the future, and revolves around a love affair between a U.S. soldier and an Iraqi soldier. But the story of this film goes way beyond that into crazy territory.
Vulture got their hands on some details from the script of the film, and if you thought you knew what was going on then think again. The stuff that is revealed is sure to shock the hell out of some people. If this film ever gets made, it's going to be incredibly controversial.
First of all, the title of the film Colbalt Neural 9 has nothing to do with script, it doesn't mean anything and will most likely be changed again.
As for the story, here's what's been revealed, and there are spoilers:
The film takes place in the future all right — nearly a hundred from now. But its main story is told in Cloverfield-esque flashbacks by digital archeologists sorting through “found footage” from CNN and chips from old digital cameras from the U.S. occupation of Iraq. The heroes are indeed a gay American soldier named (with little irony) "Butch" and an Iraqi soldier turned militant. Butch is endearing, young, and a ravishingly handsome Marine. Our spies tell us that he "just wants to fuck and kill everything" in Iraq — until, that is, he falls in love with the Iraqi.
The two meet while Butch is on a combat patrol in Iraq during the second Gulf War, and soon enough, the two are engaged in graphically described sex (actual line from the script: "They rut like animals behind this fence") albeit while disguised in burqas. The two soldiers’ relationship blossoms, and Butch begins to get to know his lover's family. But after he inadvertently draws attention to their ancestral home, disaster strikes. This tragedy radicalizes the pair and they become convinced that the only way to rid the world of evil is to kill the architect of the invasion, the then-president of the United States, George W. Bush. And so, during one of the president’s secret sorties to Iraq, they attempt to assassinate him.
All I can say is... wow.
This movie has a budget of $20 million dollars and it's one of two films that they are developing simultaneously. It's been revealed that the other film that they are working on is an adaptation of David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas. The film is being written by Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run), and the Wachowskis will possibly direct the film. This movie also has several high profile actors attached to star in it such as Halle Berry, Tom Hanks, Natalie Portman and possibly James McAvoy. So, Cloud Atlas is much further along than Colbalt, and will most likely go into production first.
Vulture also reports that a studio rep says "the Iraq movie will never, ever be made by a studio, but points out that with the money the Wachowskis pocketed from the Matrix films, they could easily self- or co-finance CN9 independently."
Ok, so now that you know a little about more about this movie and what it actually it's actually about, what do you think?
