Gore Verbinski to direct Johnny Depp in THE LONE RANGER!?

Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski is currently in talks with Disney to direct the big screen adaptation of the classic TV series The Lone Ranger! If he takes it he will once again be working withJohnny Depp who was previously cast in the role of Tonto, the lone rangers sidekick. Now, if the lone ranger had a sidekick, he would really be a lone ranger would he.

The Lone Ranger's origin story begins with a group of Texas Rangers chasing down a gang of outlaws led by Butch Cavendish. The gang ambushes the Rangers, seemingly killing them all. One survivor is found, however, by an American Indian named Tonto, who nurses him back to health. The Ranger, donning a mask and riding a white stallion named Silver, teams up with Tonto to bring the unscrupulous gang and others of that ilk to justice.

Verbinski is currently in the process of completing his CGI animated film Rango, but is looking for his next big project to start working on once he's done. The movie is being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer who he's worked with on the Pirates films, and he would direct from a script written by Justin Haythe.

Verbinski's always been a solid director, I wish he would have stuck with Universal's Bioshock movie, but he ended up leaving and now the production is at a roadblock. Verbinski has also been recently attached to films such as Heavy Metal and Clue, but there's no word on if these project are moving forward anytime soon.

What do you think about Verbinski possibly taking on The Lone Ranger?
