Paul Haggis to Write Script for THE EQUALIZER for Russell Crowe

Paul Haggis is currently in negotiations to write the big screen adaptation the TV show The Equalizer, which Russell Crowe is already attached to star in. As of right now Haggis is only writting the film, but there's a chance he could end up directing it.

Haggis is best known for writing and directing the 2004 Academy Award Best Picture winner, Crash, and he recently worked with Crowe on The Next Three Days, which is set to hit theaters on November 19th.

The Equalizer is based on the 1985 TV series with Edward Woodward. Crowe will play Robert McCall, an aging New York vigilante with a mysterious past. But I will unlock that mystery for you. McCall was a former secret agent of an unnamed organization, which was often referred to simply as The Agency, who tries to atone for his sins by offering, free of charge, his services as a troubleshooter, a protector, and an investigator. People in need find him through a newspaper ad: "Got a problem? Odds against you? Call the Equalizer."

Aided by a group of mysterious contacts, McCall traverses the streets of New York City, visiting justice upon hoodlums, rapists, racists, murderers, kidnappers, drug dealers, and other truly deserving people. His contacts are also prone to human foibles, ranging from egotism to domestic problems.

The TV series took ideas from popular spy films and private investigator shows with violent realism. The show ran for four highly rated seasons and was notable for its atmospheric theme tune.

Haggis is a talent writer and director, so it should be interesting to see what he ends up doing with this film.
