New Judge Dredd Movie to Simply be called DREDD?

Movie Judge DreddDredd by Joey Paur

It looks like the new Judge Dredd movie reboot may be going through a title change. The film is now being simply referred to as Dredd by IM Global who is currently trying to sell the new movie at the Toronto International Film Festival. I imagine this is an effort to help distance the new Judge Dredd film from the 1995 version, and I don't blame them.

Here's how IM Global is trying to pitch the movie:

DREDD takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot - if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Pete Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra's revered comic strip.

As we've reported, Karl Urban is set to play the title role in the film, and I couldn't be more excited to see what he ends up doing with the character. It was also recently announced that Juno's Olivia Thirlby has been cast as Cassandra Anderson, a character who has psychic powers which include being able to sense approaching danger, foresee events of the near future and telepathy.

Pre-production for the film began in August at Cape Town Film Studios in South Africa, and the movie will come out in theatres in 2012.

Screenwriter Alex Garland wrote both 28 Days Later and Sunshine, and Pete Travis directed Vantage Point. This new version will be a much more accurate representation of the comic book than Sylvester Stallone's awful 90's version. The film is also be produced by Danny Boyle's DNA Films. With Garland on board to write the script and Urban taking on the lead role, this should turn out being a great adaptation.
