Ben's Top 5 of Sundance 2011

RantMovie Sundance by Ben Pearson

Thanks to GeekTyrant, I was able to attend the Sundance Film Festival for the first time this year. I had a blast - Dr. Venkman and I covered a ridiculous amount of movies while we were here, I had a chance to meet some of my favorite movie bloggers in person, and - most importantly - we all had a great time doing what we love. It's with these fond memories in mind that I compile this list of my Top 5 Favorite Films of Sundance 2011.

5. The Guard: If you liked In Bruges, you'll dig The Guard - an unconventional buddy cop film with biting humor, an excellent story, and memorable characters.

4. Like Crazy: This film spoke to me in a personal way, and great performances from Anton Yelchin and breakout star Felicity Jones hold this movie together even though the ending kind of falls apart.

3. Being Elmo - A Puppeteer's Journey: This movie was so freaking adorable. Even the biggest cynic will probably be enchanted by it.

2. Hobo With A Shotgun - Rutger Hauer blowing bad guys away in the most ridiculously awesome ways imaginable isn't exactly subtle, but this is hands down the best modern grindhouse film. If you like the title, you'll probably like the movie.

1. Take Shelter: Michael Shannon's towering performance and Jeff Nichols' confident direction combine for one of the most powerful films of the festival and one that's sure to remain on my favorite of the year list as 2011 progresses.

There you have it. Thanks for reading, and don't forget to check out all our coverage of the festival if you missed anything along the way!
