THE HUNGER GAMES Film Adaptation to be PG-13
Director Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, Pleasantville) has confirmed that his film adaptation of Suzanne Collins' novel The Hunger Games is aiming for a PG-13 rating, which shouldn't really be that surprising to any of you. I'm sure many of us already assumed that it was going to be PG-13, after all many of the fans of the book are under 17 years of age. Of course some of the adult fans were hoping for an 'R' rating, but that's not going to happen. According to Ross:
"It’s not going to be an R-rated movie because I want the 12- and 13- and 14-year-old-fans to be able to go see it. This book means too much to too many teenagers for it not to be PG-13. It’s their story and they deserve to be able to access it completely. And I don’t think it needs to be more extreme than that.” He promises though that his vision for the movie will be just as stirring as anything found in Collins’ prose. “I don’t need to have a huge prosthetic budget or make this movie incredibly bloody in order for it to be just as compelling, just as scary, and just as riveting."
It makes sense to me that The Hunger Games would get a PG-13 rating, because that age group is the books built in target market. They will just have to be creative when filming those brutal scenes in the book. Just keep in mind that The Dark Knight was PG-13 and that movie was pretty damn dark and intense, so it's not like it can't be done.
I thought the book was great, and I'm looking forward to seeing Ross's film adaptation. I think he'll make a solid movie that everyone will enjoy.
What do you all think about the movie getting a PG-13 rating?
