UNCHARTED 3: THE HEROES JOURNEY - Ed Zwick Directed Documentary Short
Sony has released a new documentary short directed by Ed Zwick called Uncharted 3: The Heroes Journey. The doc was inspired by the upcoming game Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, and it goes into depth exploring the Action Adventure genre. The doc includes interviews with people such as Sam Rockwell, Michelle Rodriguez, Nolan North (Nathan Drake) and others as they discuss the nature of heroism.
Zwick is best known for his film work directing movies such as Glory, The Last Samurai, Blood Diamond, andDefiance. All of these films explore the heroics within people, and what they do when they are focrced into a situation to survive or in the position when they have to save others. Here's what the director had to say about the short in a interview with Empire...
I thought the best way to do it was to create a mosiac, if you will, of different responses, and so I asked a number of people I thought would be an eclectic and sometimes maybe unconventional group, and have a conversation with them.
As far as video games being concidered an art form he said...
Well before Disney did Fantasia, before Miyazaki did Howl's Moving Castle, people were loathed to think of animation as art, so I would never want to preclude the possibility that games could transcend to art.
The tools are technological, it's what one does with them that is artful or not– I know that the problem with games, like anything, are adhering to any number of commerical influences, and the whole notion of something being interactive is possibly the real injuction stopping games from being art.
He went on to say that he's never given any thought into directing the live action Uncharted film being developed, which is a shame because I bet he would do a hell of a job taking on this material.
