OLDBOY Remake will have Darker Ending and other Details

Movie Oldboy by Joey Paur

Spike Lee is currently prepping up to direct the remake of the Chan-wook Park thriller Oldboy with Josh Brolin in the lead role, possibly Colin Firth in the role of the villain and Rooney Mara in the lead female role. There seems to be a lot of negativity toward the Americanized remake of this film, I'm one of the geeks that feels a remake isn't really necessary. Today we have learned that this new movie is going to be a little different than the one we all know and love. There are new characters and elements that have been thrown into the story leading to what producer Roy Lee calls a darker ending. Here's what he had to say in a recent interview...

We are planning to shoot 'Old Boy' in March and that should start pre-production in late January. This is a brand new script by Mark Protosevich. It is very similar to the film, but Protosevich has added new elements that will throw off the audience who have seen the original movie because there are new characters and new situations that present themselves in a way that change the story but eventually go in the same direction. The ending will be something audiences--especially fans of the original movie--will be very happy with. Some may consider it a bit darker.

These guys are going to say everything they can that will try to get audiences pumped up for this movie. It tends to work, but until the movie actually comes out, we'll never know if what they have planned works or not. I hope the movie turns out to be good, I really do! But the original is just so badass I don't know if they will pull it off. We'll just have to wait and see! He goes on to talk about the classic hallway scene saying...

...there's going to be a different interpretation of the hallway scene that is hopefully going to be Spike's signature moment in the movie that he wants to show in a way that has never been seen in an action movie.

Very freakin' interesting. The hallway scene we all saw in the original was completely badass, and I had never seen anything like it before I saw that movie, so I wonder how or if Lee will be able to top it. Now I'm looking forward to seeing what he is going to do with it.

After having read about the plans and changes they will make, what are your thoughts on the Oldboy remake?
