SMURFS writers to pen POPEYE for Sony Pictures Animation

Jay Scherick and David Ronn (The Smurfs) have been hired to pen the script for Popeye by Sony Pictures Animation. The feature adaptation of the comic book will be done in stereoscopic 3D. Avi Arad and Sony are producing the project.

Here is what Sony Pictures' Bob Osher had to say in a statement:

“Scherick & Ronn have a remarkable talent in re-energizing beloved characters. As they demonstrated with The Smurfs, they embrace the iconic characteristics of these timeless characters and craft a story that really engages moviegoers today.” 

The duo is already hard at work on a sequel to The Smurfs, after scripting the upcoming Baywatch original movie. I remember watching cartoon versions and the live-action version with Robin Williams as a kid and loving them. I personally am fine living without another 3D film like this. What are your thoughts?
