Benicio Del Toro not playing Khan in STAR TREK sequel says J.J. Abrams

There has been a lot of talk about who Benicio del Toro would play in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek sequel ever since it was announced he was sought for a role in November. According to Latino Review, del Toro will be playing the role of none other than Khan in the highly anticipated sequel. Not long after that news broke, HitFix is reporting that he will in fact NOT be playing the iconic character.

Who to believe?! Latino Review's El Mayimbe is fairly reliable in his news. On the flipside, HitFix's Drew McWeeny spoke directly to Abrams, who is directing the film. Based on that I personally believe Abrams over the Latino Review post. There have been instances of directors fabricating information to keep their plot undere wraps.

Here is what Abrams had to say about Del Toro as Khan - "Not true."

Alice Eve was just added to the cast this past week, and is reportedly going to be new to the canon. Del Toro may be in the film, but is not likely to play Khan. I have a feeling that Abrams, Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof are a tad bit more creative than to make a rehash of Wrath of Khan.

Filming is slated to start in early 2012 with Paramount planning to release the pic on May 17, 2013.  There is still one more major role left to cast. It is rumored to be another villain, “someone who's older and in more of a supporting character to del Toro.”

What are your thoughts on this news? Who do you think del Toro will play?
