Edgar Wright Reveals He Has Penned a Musical!
The New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles is one of the theaters that I have not been to before, and boy, am I missing out. For the past three years the theater has been home to the Wright Stuff, hosted by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World). Typically the director shows some of his favorite films, often introduced by special guests, and has a Q&A afterwards.
This year Wright showed films that he had never seen, after compiling lists of suggestions from readers and friends. Some of the films included this year incclude, Steamboat Bill Jr., Throne Of Blood, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and To Be Or Not To Be. During one of these events Wright may have shed some light on his next directing project.
Thanks to The Moveable Fest (via The Playlist) we have a recap of a screening of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, where Wright revealed that it was the only film he selected without anyone's specific recommendations. Apparently he stated, "I've written a script which is kind of like a musical. Slightly a departure for me in some ways, but when I’ve told people about the movie and the idea, most of them have said, 'You’ve got to see ‘Umbrellas of Cherbourg,’' So here we are.”
This makes us wonder which of his upcoming projects will be the musical? Obviously Ant-Man and The World's End won’t be, so that leaves Baby Driver. Not much is known about the project, so it could be that or an entirely new project that has yet to be announced.
Baby Driver is his next project, so we will find out soon enough. When you think about it, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World has the essence of a musical. I am interested in seeing just about anything that Wright puts forth.
