DJ Caruso in talks to Direct Preacher?

Movie DJ Caruso by Joey Paur

The big screen adaptation of the comic book series Preacher is still in the process of trying to get into development for awhile now. Most recently director Sam Mendes (Road to Perdition) was attached to direct it a one point, and after he dropped out of the project it was rumored that Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan) could end up taking it on. John August (Big Fish) wrote the screenplay for the film, and according to producer Neil Moretz this will be the first in a series of Preacher films, and they want it to be rated 'R'.

Today our friends over at /Film are reporting that DJ Caruso (Distrubia) is in talks to take on the directing duties. Apparently his involvement all depends on how well his next film I Am Number Four does at the box office. This is just a rumor for now, but it will be interesting to see how this plays out. I think Caruso is a decent director, I've enjoyed his films, and I wouldn't mind seeing what he does with this comic book.

Preacher was created by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon, and tells the story of Texas reverend Jesse Custer who, after merging with the escaped offspring of a demon and an angel, find himself imbued with the word of God, the power to command anyone to do his bidding. Teamed with his ex girlfriend, Tulip O'Hare and an Irish vampire named Cassidy, Custer sets out across America to track down the almighty and force him to explain why he abandoned creation.

In a previous interview Moretz had this to say about the script,

We’ve got a great script. John August wrote a script that I think is terrific. The hardest thing was with all the books-the Preacher books-was how to distill it down.  And what he made the smart decision instead of trying to cram everything into one, there’s plenty of room for 2 or 3 movies. So that’s what he’s done and he’s done a really faithful adaption but made it probably more accessible to a broader audience right now. That movie’s definitely R-rated and it’s an amazing central character.

What are your thoughts in Caruso possibly taking on this film project?
