D.J. Caruso Officially Signed on to Direct PREACHER

Movie D.J. Caruso by Joey Paur

Earlier this month is was reported that I Am Number Four director D.J. Caruso was in talks to direct the comic book film adaptation of Preacher, once to be directed by Sam Mendes (Road to Perdition). Today Caruso confirmed via his twitter account he has officially closed his deal, and is set to direct the movie.

My deal just closed on Preacher. Going back to the dark side and pretty fucking pumped!

I liked Caruso's Disturbia, and Eagle Eye was OK. I just saw I Am Number Four and was entertained, but it wasn't really that good of a movie. It had some fun moments, but it looked like something that belonged on the CW. It will be interesting to see what he does with Preacher. I'm just excited the movie is getting made, and I'd like to think Caruso will do a great job bringing it to life.

He will direct the film from a script written by John August (Big Fish), and according to producer Neil Moretz this will be the first in a series of Preacher films, and they want it to be rated 'R'.

Preacher was created by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon, and tells the story of Texas reverend Jesse Custer who, after merging with the escaped offspring of a demon and an angel, find himself imbued with the word of God, the power to command anyone to do his bidding. Teamed with his ex girlfriend, Tulip O'Hare and an Irish vampire named Cassidy, Custer sets out across America to track down the almighty and force him to explain why he abandoned creation.

In a previous interview Moretz had this to say about the script,

We’ve got a great script. John August wrote a script that I think is terrific. The hardest thing was with all the books-the Preacher books-was how to distill it down.  And what he made the smart decision instead of trying to cram everything into one, there’s plenty of room for 2 or 3 movies. So that’s what he’s done and he’s done a really faithful adaption but made it probably more accessible to a broader audience right now. That movie’s definitely R-rated and it’s an amazing central character.

What are your thoughts in Caruso possibly taking on this film project?
