Paramount hires Ben Schwartz for SOAPDISH remake

Paramount Pictures has hired Ben Schwartz to develop a remake of 1991's Soapdish, which took audiences on a comedic romp behind the scenes at a daytime soap.

Aaron Spelling and Alan Greisman produced the original film which had a cast that included, Sally Field, Robert Downey Jr., Teri Hatcher, Kevin Kline, and Whoopi Goldberg. Greisman will once again serve as producer along with Rob Reiner.

Schwartz is successfully managing both acting and writing. He has a starring role opposite Don Cheadle in the Showtime pilot House of Lies. He's also starring in the indie comedy Peep World with Michael C. Hall, Rainn Wilson and Sarah Silverman which opens March 25.

As a writer he's worked on Robot Chicken, and won an Emmy in 2009 for co-writing Hugh Jackman’s opening number for the 81st Academy Awards. He's also a part of the comedy troupe, Upright Citizens Brigade.

I remember seeing this film when it was in heavy rotation on HBO. I think it was pretty good, but don't see any need to remake it. What are your thoughts on this news?
