DVD Review: THE WALKING DEAD Season One

The Walking Dead definitely caught the world by storm on Halloween 2010. I have to admit I’ve never read nor do I own one of the comics by Robert Kirkman but I’d heard about it simply because of one word, zombies. A comic book about zombies and this comic book wasn’t for the little tykes but for the true horror fans.

I followed The Walking Dead from the very first announcement AMC released and then went on about my daily routine. Then there was this one press release where Frank Darabont’s name got my attention.  Not only did he sign on as the first episode director but he helped write this thing too, hell he created the series for AMC is what he did! With a team like Kirkman and Darabont and the new edginess of AMC this was simply a winning combination, but how would it turn out? The answer is epic! I’ve never witnessed a TV show of this magnitude! The gritty, pale, rotten look of the undead to the few surviving humans just trying to make it to the next day.  The makeup  FX  are the best I’ve seen and it’s on freaking TV, they didn’t hold back at all! Andrew Lincoln plays Deputy Rick Grimes  who leads a small pack of survivors looking for any small shred of hope or even an answer.  Not to mention standout guest appearances like Norman Reedus and Michael Rooker who play the two rough-type Dixon brothers. This show is as good or better than any zombie movie I’ve seen, hands down!

Now, getting to The Walking Dead Season One DVD, we get two discs including all six epic episodes with the second including the special features.  All of the special features are worth the watch! The only thing missing is a commentary.  I guess that and the only other downside I can think of at all is I wanted there to be more episodes!  The DVD case comes with a sleeve with a teaser sticker on the front for Season 2 coming  fall 2011. Why must we wait so long for Season 2? Actually I’m ok with that because Halloween fits perfectly for the next season to begin, just like the first.

Bottom line is, go BUY this DVD on MArch 8th! Buy two and give one as a gift!

Synopsis:

THE WALKING DEAD: The Complete First Season” breathes new life into the zombie genre as it unfolds a post-apocalyptic saga that follows a group of survivors, led by police officer Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln, Love Actually), who searches for a safe haven and, hopefully, a new home, far from the undead that now roam the earth hungry for human flesh.  Each episode explores the challenges of life in a world overrun by zombies, and the toll it takes on the survivors who now find themselves going to extremes just to see another day. In this horrific world gone mad, each turn brings new surprises and dangers, as the survivors try to regain some semblance of a normal life.

THE WALKING DEAD” is based on the popular Image Comics’ comic book written by Robert Kirkman. The series premiered on AMC Fearfest Halloween night and immediately became the most watched drama series in cable’s history among Adults 18-49 with 3.5 million viewers. It also gained a following among critics (from People to Vanity Fair) who have hailed it as one of the best new series of the year.
