Could Guillermo del Toro Direct PACIFIC RIM Next?
Earlier todayAt the Mountains of Madnessproducer Don Murphy said that Guillermo del Toro would start shooting that film in June with Tom Cruise. Shortly after he gave that statement he took it back, and now a report has hit that Del Toro might end up directing another film called Pacific Rim before he gets to At the Mountains of Madness. Apparently Mountians of Madness is still having a hard time getting an official greenlight. Legendary Pictures is moving fast on this Pacific Rim project and they want Del Toro on board to direct it bad.
Legendary Pictures paid a high-six figures for the rights to develop Pacific Rim, which was written by Travis Beacham, the original screenwriter for The Clash of the Titans. I wasn't a big fan of the Clash of the Titans remake, but I heard the script was incredibly strong before it was butchered. Beacham and Del Toro almost worked together at one point when the director flirted with The Killing on Carnival Row at New Line.
Pacific Rim is set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace.
I'd much rather see At the Mountains of Madness get made, but Universal Pictures is still freaking out about the $150 million dollar budget that del toro wants to make it. They aren't sure if the want to fork over that kind of money for a hard-R horror film. I say give it to him, let him make the movie! This could end up being another big movie that falls though the fingers of Del Toro, which is a shame since he left The Hobbit to pursue it.
What are your thoughts on all this? Would you rather see del Toro make At the Mountains of Madness, or Pacific Rim?
