GLASSES-FREE 3D on iPad 2 and iPhone 4 via Head Tracking

So this pseudo 3D effect is utilizing the front facing camera to track your face and orient the content. There have been a lot of attempts at using the accelerometer but this looks to the the magic soution. While it looks like the iPad 3 will sport a Retina display, the idea of a 3D one seems like a few years out. Especially as the resolution for the the glasses-free screens used in the Nintendo 3DS would probably not match Apple's Retina Display for a few more years.

Currently in development at EHCI this software will have some limited but interesting uses. As you need to move the device around to get the feeling of the effect, don't expect to be watching 3D movies on the iPad or iPhone anytime soon. But it could make for some cool use in puzzle games.

What EHCI says about their software:

We track the head of the user with the front facing camera in order to create a glasses-free monocular 3D display. Such spatially-aware mobile display enables to improve the possibilities of interaction. It does not use the accelerometers and relies only on the front camera.
