Sean Penn to Join Christian Bale in THE LAST PHOTOGRAPH

Sean Penn is currently entertaining the idea of joining Christian Bale in a new Drama called The Last Photograph. The film is set to be directed by Niels Arden Oplev (The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo) from a script written by Kurt Johnstad (300).

The film was set up at Warner Bros. but is currently in negotiations to move over to Dark Castle where Joel Silver would jump on board as a producer. Zack and Deborah Snyder are also producing the film with Hollywood Gang's Gianni Nunnari.

Before today, all we knew was that the film revolves around a photograph that becomes the catalyst for a journey two men undertake through war-torn Afghanistan. Deadline has a more detailed description of the story,

Set in Afghanistan, it is a timely drama that has elements of The Searchers and Taken. Bale plays a war correspondent who witnesses and is the only survivor of an attack on a group of Americans. Penn is circling the role of a retired ex-special ops soldier who comes to the scene determined to free a family member who has been kidnapped. The journalist agrees to help identify the kidnappers and travel the rough terrain to find them, in exchange for the story. The road brings them in confrontation with tribal regions of Afghanistan, and none of the diplomats will help.

This sounds like it will be a pretty intense movie. The idea actually came from Snyder, which is different for him. I'm happy he's not writing the script because, well... after Sucker Punch we know Snyder can't write original material. The film has got a good creative team behind it though, so it sould be a solid movie.

This film will start shooting in 2012 as soon as Bale is finished with The Dark Knight Rises
