Catherine Zeta-Jones joins ROCK OF AGES cast

Catherine Zeta-Jones is close to joining the cast of Adam Shankman’s musical Rock of Ages. The character (specifically created for the film) is described as, "if Tipper Gore and Anita Bryant had a love child. She is this hardcore, moral majority, arch-conservative who wants to shut down rock’n roll in the great city of Los Angeles."

Shankman had this to say, “It’s a character that we only really came to in the last month. The character was invented to streamline the stories.” He goes on to say this about Zeta-Jones' joining the cast,“It’s like the musical gods just blessed us!”

The New Line production is based on Broadway musical, and is scheduled to begin shooting May 19 in Miami. The cast also includes, Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Mary J. Blige, Paul Giamatti, Julianne Hough and newcomer Diego Gonzalez Boneta.

The film tells the story "of a small-town girl (Hough) who comes to Hollywood for the 1980s music scene and is nearly destroyed by it. Although she falls for a budding musician named Drew (Boneta), she also catches the eye of Stacee Jaxx (Cruise), an arrogant rocker at the height of his career, ends up as a stripper in a club run by Blige but also finds true love at the end."

I think this cast is shaping up pretty nicely. Zeta-Jones is a solid actress and one that I can see as an "arch-conservative". I am a fan of 80's music and think it will be cool to see Baldwin and Cruise singing.
