Zach Braff Cast in THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP and Talks About Directing Again

Movie Casting by Joey Paur

Scrubs star Zach Braff recently gave a couple of interview in whcih he talks about getting back in the directors chair and reveals that he's joined the cast of a new film called The Devil and the Deep

Braff is an all around talented guy who writes, directs and acts. Many of you already know that he's directed a great film called Garden State, and since that movie many of you and myself have been wait to see what he would do next for his second film project as a writer and director. Before we get to that lets talk about this new film that he's starring in, The Devil and the Blue Dress real quick.

The film also stars Chloe Moretz and Jessica Biel. He says that it's "a really, really well-written script by a guy named Bill Purple." The film is about a man who's having a hard time dealing with the grief from recently losing his wife, an antisocial architect that befriends a humorous young girl and agrees to help her build a raft to cross the Atlantic.

This sounds like an perfect film for Braff to be a part of. Seems like his dramady kind of style. As for getting back in the directors chair, he's working on it and it sounds like it could happen soon. Over the last few years he's been trying to get a couple projects off the ground such as Swingles and Open Hearts. It seems like Scrubs was one of the reasons it was hard for him to get out there and make a follow-up movie. He goes on to talk about what happened,

There's two parts to it. One I was able to make 'Garden State' miraculously with tremendous support while doing 'Scrubs' so then when I continued to do 'Scrubs'... In hindsight, it was amazing how much lined up perfectly so I could squeeze that in while doing a TV show and then for the rest of the run of 'Scrubs,' I wasn't able to get those wonderful things to line up again because it just didn't work out. Now I've had two movies almost come together, both of which fell apart. I could have made a crap movie ten times over but I'm trying to make a really good movie that I stand by and that I believe in, so tell all of those people who are waiting, 'I thank you so much and it's coming.' I've been trying to navigate the Hollywood system and make something really good that you'll all like again and not make something that I don't believe in.

I really like that the guy doesn't want to make a crappy film just to make one for the money. He wants to make a quality project that he can be proud of, and his fans will enjoy. He did write a play that will premiere this summer called All New People, and I guess there's a possibility if it goes well, that it could get a big screen adaptation. Here's a run down of the story.

It’s the dead of winter and the summer vacation getaway of Long Beach Island, New Jersey is desolate and blanketed in snow. Charlie is 35, heartbroken and just wants some time away from the rest of the world. The island ghost town seems to be the perfect escape until his solitude is interrupted by a motley parade of misfits who show up and change his plans. A hired beauty, the townie fireman, and an eccentric British real estate agent desperately trying to stay in the country suddenly find themselves tangled together in a beach house where the mood is anything but sunny.

Sounds like a story he would put together. He did say that he is already working on an adaptation of his play saying,

One idea is to forgo the whole system — to kind of go the Tyler Perry route and make a really small-scale movie like [Hard Cost of Living]. And Gary Gilbert, who financed Garden State has already said he’d finance it. So if the things that are on my burners that require more of a substantial budget don’t come together, I think what we’re going to do in maybe the fall or winter is that I’m going to direct and Gary’s going to produce a movie on this scale so we can just make something.

Braff is really looking forward to directing another film, so I hope something works out for him soon. It will be great to see him direct anther movie. The next film he can be seen in is a drama called The Cost of High Living, which is set to be released in theaters May 13th, but it will be available on VOD tomorrow.
