DVD Review: GENE-FUSION

Review DVDAnimated by brians

MTI Home Video’s upcoming animated feature entitled Gene-Fusion puts genetically cross-engineered animals in the ring to “duke it out”. You also get some crazy mixed breeds that you thought you’d never see and watching these things go at it is kind of funny at times. This animated movie is almost right up my alley because I’m such a fan of the new creature feature anyway, thus my own creation of Crocaloctopus, half Crocodile and half Octopus. He should have been in this!

Now, there’s no big names to really push this movie but the animation is pretty good or almost as good as any  top notch video game you get these days. Being a low budget animated film you can’t expect it to be as good as the big studios animation. You also get all the characters any story needs, the wise mentor, all the kids he befriends, including the girl, a geeky kid who is funny at times and the jock and of course you always have to have your villain, in this case it’s an alien.

This 80 minute cartoon ride just really doesn’t hit on many cylinders. It has a few good moments, like seeing what mixed gene fusion creature shows up next or listening to a few lines that have a little humor but those are pretty much the highlights of this animated feature.

The bottom line on the Gene-Fusion DVD is it’s ok for any audience or the family watching together on movie night but it is pretty forgettable at the same time. Your kids might enjoy it but they’ll move on to the next bigger one pretty fast! The story of Gene Fusion is great, it just needed more of a budget and maybe a familiar name or two to push it. If you do want to watch it, be on the lookout on May 10th.

Synopsis:

In the year 2310, a new sport, Gene-Fusion is all the rage! In this exciting game, specially-trained athletes, called Fusers, design their own super-creature by combining three forms of animal DNA... Four teens, seemingly plucked from obscurity, are trained to be Fusers. They become instant celebrities as they perform before sold out crowds. But what they don't know is that each of them has a role to play in an alien conspiracy to take over the world. Only through learning to work together as a team can these four, young heroes take on this alien threat and save the planet from destruction.

Special Features: There are no special features that come on this DVD, not surprising really.
