PlayStation Network being "rebuilt" after outage
The PlayStation Network has been offlline after an "external intrusion" caused the company to turn off the service, so that it could strengthen its network infrastructure. The outage came just after Tuesday's release of Mortal Kombat, which is available on the PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360. It also comes as Amazon.com restores computers used by other major websites as an outage stretched into a fourth day.
Patrick Seybold, Sony’s Senior Director of Corporate Communications, had this to say about the intrusion via the PlayStation blog:
“An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th. Providing quality entertainment services to our customers and partners is our utmost priority. We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly, and we once again thank you for your patience. We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share.”
In a recent progress update, Seybold talked about what Sony engineers have been doing to get the service back online:
“We sincerely regret that PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have been suspended, and we are working around the clock to bring them both back online. Our efforts to resolve this matter involve re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure. Though this task is time-consuming, we decided it was worth the time necessary to provide the system with additional security.”
I use my PS3 to watch Netflix more than I do games lately. It takes multiple attempts to log in to the service, but after many attempts I am able to get on and watch a movie. If this happened when I was addicted to a new game I would be pissed.
