Russell Crowe wants to Direct a Cop Film called 77

Movie Russell Crowe by Joey Paur

It looks like Russell Crowe is ready to jump in the directors chair with a new 1970's based period crime drama called 77. Not only does he want to direct it, but he's also looking to star in it as well. The story for the film comes from James Ellroy, the same guy who came up with LA Confidential. David Matthews has adapted the story into a screenplay.

The film actually sounds like it would be a pretty intense and epic cop movie. According to Deadline, "The drama connects two stories from 1974. It deals with the unsolved murder of an LAPD officer, and the nationally televised shootout in South Central L.A. between the Symbionese Liberation Army and the LAPD, where 50,000 rounds of gunfire were exchanged. The events will be seen through the eyes of two police partners, one black and one white."

I love a good cop film, and this sounds like it has potential to be pretty incredible flick. Crowe has always been a fantastic actor, and it will be interesting to see what kind of talent he has behind the camera. As of right now he's not officially attached to the project, but he's seriously considering it. I hope he decides to take it on. What do you think?
