Jeremy Renner playing Steve McQueen in biopic
Jeremy Renner has formed a new production company called The Combine, which he plans to run with partner Don Handfield. The company has their first project in development, a Steve McQueen biopic that will be a starring vehicle for the actor. The screenplay will be written by James Gray, (writer and director of We Own the Night) The story will be based on the two books by Marshall Terrill: Portrait of an American Rebeland The Life and Legend of a Hollywood Icon. Ivan Zacharias is attached direct the film, his first gig since starting as a video director.
Renner and Handfield will produce the McQueen project with Hurt Locker producer Greg Shapiro, Cross Creek Pictures’ Brian Oliver (one of the producers of Black Swan), and Zacharias’ producing partner Nick Landon. The project is still in the development stage. Renner has the perfect look to play the iconic 70's star, but he has a lot of projects in the works as it stands. He recently wrapped Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and is currently in Berlin shooting Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters for Paramount. His next role is in Joss Whedon's The Avengers, which just got underway in New Mexico. He's been offered the lead in The Bourne Legacy for Universal, which would shoot in the fall, and he may film Sheldon Turner's By Virtue Fall in February. He also is lending his voice to the next Ice Age film.
I love McQueen in The Great Escape, Bullitt, The Getaway and Papillon. Renner is a great choice to play the star. I am excited to see this film.
