DEADPOOL Gets an Unknown Director
We’ve been hearing a lot of awesome things about the ‘R’ rated Deadpool script written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The buzz has been so positive that I've become extremely excited for the film. The last we heard Ryan Reynolds was still on board to star in the film, and that the story would entirely ignore what happened with Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
20th Century Fox is finally moving forward with the project, and they've hired Tim Miller to direct the highly anticipated movie. Isn't that great!? So uh, who the hell in Tim Miller? He's a special effects artist and creative supervisor. He's never directed a movie, but he's worked as an artist on X-Men, X-Men 2 and Daredevil. He also worked as a creative supervisor on Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. At one point Robert Rodriguez was offered the gig but he turned it down.
So did Fox hire this first time director so that they could control the films production, just like they did with X-Men Origins: Wolverine? It’s not like a first time director like this is going to be given complete freedom on a film like this. Since he hasn’t really done anything it’s hard to say if he’s going to be a good choice.
It’s also a surprising choice to give a first time director a huge budgeted tentpole film like this that fanboys and fangirls will love to tear apart if they get the chance. Fox hasn’t been doing very well with the geek fans since X-Men 3.
But, congratulations to Miller for landing the awesome directing gig. It could have gone to pretty much anyone else with more experience. I'm sure he'll give this film everything he's got. Hopefully it's good so the fans don't tear him apart.
What do you all think about this Tim Miller directing Deadpool?
