Gerard Butler's soccer comedy PLAYING THE FIELD bought by FilmDistrict
FilmDistrict has purchased U.S. distribution rights to the soccer comedy, Playing the Field from Nu Image/Millenium Films. The film is directed by Gabriele Muccino (Seven Pounds) and stars Gerard Butler, Uma Thurman, Dennis Quaid, Jessica Biel and Noah Lomax.
Robbie Fox wrote the script that has Butler playing a former pro soccer player who finds himself dodging romantic advances from soccer moms after he agrees to coach his son's youth team in an attempt to bond with the boy. Biel is set to play Butler's ex-wife, and Thurman will play a fellow parent trying to get the attention of Butler's character. Quaid will be playing one of the coaches on the opposing teams.
Butler and Alan Siegal's Evil Twin Productions produced the film along with Kevin Misher, Jonathan Mostow, Heidi Jo Markel and John Thompson. FilmDistrict is run by Peter Schlessel and Bob Berney. Their goal is to launch films that can play in wide release, and were responsible for producing the hit Insidious.
This film sounds better than your typical romantic comedy because of the cast. Butler has not had much luck lately with these types of films, but the cast is decent so let's hope it goes well.
